Staff Educator – Fincastle

Position / Title:  Staff Educator

SUMMARY:

The Staff Educator reports to and receives general direction from the Director of Nursing and is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, evaluating and coordinating the total staff development program of orientation and in-service training in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and established policies and procedures.  In addition, the Area Nursing Instructor will provide clinical support to the various facilities, as directed by the CNO.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan, implement, direct and evaluate the facility education program for nursing assistants.

  • Ensure that all applicants are prepared for approval by the DHS for Orientation, In-Service, Continuing Education, and CNA Certification training.
  • Prepare DHS renewal applications for all educational programs as required by the State.
  • Provide program change information to DHS, when appropriate, within 30 day of change as required by the State.
  • Maintain a current schedule of all students and outside instructors who may be in the facility doing clinical training.
  • Ensure ALL Nursing Assistants hired by the facility complete a certification program within four months of the date of hire.
  • Conduct competency testing for all nursing skills, quarterly, annually, as needed.
  • Provide comprehensive orientation program to all new hires.
  • Schedule and coordinate annual mandatory in-service education.
  • Provide support in 100% compliance with monthly in-service training modules.
  • Provide resources for licensed staff in-service in clinical skills development.
  • Act as facility liaison to develop and maintain relationships with appropriate student affiliate programs.

 

Plan, implement and conduct a comprehensive orientation program for all new hires.

  • Schedule and coordinate an orientation program in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and established policies and procedures. Ensure training occurs prior to a direct patient care assignment. Orientation programs must comply with Corporate Orientation Guidelines.
  • Ensure all nursing assistants complete required orientation training.
  • Complete an Orientation Skills Return Demonstration Checklist on all new nursing assistants showing they are competent to perform all direct patient care tasks they will be assigned. Promptly forward a copy of the completed checklist to the HR/Payroll Coordinator for inclusion in the personnel record.
  • Provide individual skill training to new staff in any deficient area noted during Orientation Skills Return Demonstration Checklist before allowing the nursing assistant to perform the task with a resident.
  • The Orientation program for all employees, must include a minimum of the following: PPD/Hepatitis B; Infection Control Procedures; Proper Handwashing Techniques; Infectious Waste Handling & Disposal; Blood Borne Pathogen Education; Standard Precautions; Dress Code; How QA applies to all employees; HIPAA/Confidentiality. In addition to the above minimum requirements, the orientation for all direct care staff, must include a minimum of the following:  Fall Prevention Policy & Procedure; Pressure Wound Prevention; Care of the Dementia Patient; Patient Assignment; End of Shift Reporting/Condition Change; Charting; ADL Computer Training; Hold over staffing procedure; Documentation Standards & Routines; Emergency Supplies; Crash Cart Procedures.  Additionally, orientation programs must comply with Corporate Orientation Guidelines.
  • Promptly forward a copy of the completed Orientation Checklist to the HR/Payroll Coordinator for inclusion in the personnel record.

 

Plan, implement and conduct a comprehensive in-service training program for all staff.

  • Plan and deliver In-Service training for all staff addressing the 12 mandatory topics on an annual basis. Facility consultants should be utilized where appropriate.
  • Ensure all employees receive a minimum of 12 hours in-service training per year.
  • Schedule and deliver In-Service training through classes which are made available at times accessible to all shifts.
  • Evaluate In-Service training to develop programs that enhance patient care skills.
  • Make regular checks for competency of nursing staffs skill performance focusing on the, positive regard for residents and developmental needs of direct care staff, intervene with mini in-service immediately if appropriate.
  • Prepare and file lesson plans for all programs taught.
  • Maintain all In-Service Education records for a minimum of 4 years. Documentation must be maintained in accordance with the Corporate Guidelines for In-Service Education.
  • Maintain a three-ring “Course Content Binder” for each year. Copies of course content, lesson plans, handouts, sign-in roster should be filed chronologically for each in-service presented.
  • Maintain a three-ring “Individual In-Service Education Attendance” Binder. Individual In-Service Education Attendance Rosters are filled alphabetically. Ensure all attendees sign both the sign-in roster and the Individual In-Service Education Attendance Roster for each in-service training attended.

 

Ensure ALL Nursing Assistants hired by the facility complete a certification program within four months of the date of hire. Certification program may be conducted in-facility or contracted to outside schools, agencies or other facilities.

  • In-Facility Nursing Assistant Certification Programs (If Applicable)
    • Schedule, develop, and deliver Certified Nursing Assistant training that enables all non-certified direct care employees to complete the program within four months of their date of hire.
    • Communicate and uphold staff development policies on failure to complete the program, testing and submission of forms, fees, and other documentation.
    • Ensure that immediate supervision of all nursing assistants during clinical training hours is provided by a licensed nurse.
    • Complete a Skills Return Demonstration Checklist for each student to verity competency in all resident care skills. Retrain and re-evaluate students not performing adequately.
    • Provide final evaluation tools and performance standards for all required skill areas and evaluate to indicate pass/fail or retest requirements in accordance with facility policies.
    • Provide a list of all nursing assistants who pass the facility CNA certification class, submit their CNA applications and their fee payments to DHS in a timely manner upon successful completion of the program.
  • Nursing Assistant Certification Programs Contracted To Outside Agencies (If applicable)
    • Annually review contract/letter of agreement with agency or school providing CNA training to the facility’s direct care staff to determine if contractor meets requirements and staffing needs.
    • Evaluate quality of training CNA’s receive and recommend appropriate changes.

 

Provide Clinical Support to the Chief Nursing Officer at any Kissito facility, as directed by the Chief Nursing Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
  • Must possess a current, unencumbered Registered Nurse License issued by the State.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care, or other related health care facility.
  • Must have 1 year experience in direct resident care and supervision of staff education as required under OBRA and state regulation or must within 6 months of employment, obtain a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing educational programs.       Courses must be approved by the Board of Registered Nurses or administered by an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be certified to train CPR and AED.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach, stoop, kneel, bend, lift and move intermittently throughout the workday throughout the facility.
  • Must be able to work outside of normal work hours including nights, holidays, and weekends as needed to meet facility and position demands.
  • Must be free of diseases that may be transmitted in the performance of job responsibilities during the stage of communicability.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Most possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures necessary for providing quality care.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Works throughout the facility. Works beyond normal duty hours, on weekends and holidays when necessary.  Interacts with residents, family members, and staff under all conditions and circumstances.  Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, and visitors.   Exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and conditions including but not limited to exposure to hepatitis B viruses.
